Waikato has topped the list in the latest figures for people placed in jobs under an employment programme driven by local mayors.

The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) is celebrating a significant milestone, having guided 500 mostly young and Covid-19 displaced workers into sustainable employment through its Community Recovery Programme.

The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) has established a “Work Exposure” fund to support provincial and metropolitan councils to run events that enable employers to engage young people in the world of work and to build positive relationships with one another.

The dashboard, developed by leading data analysts DOT Loves Data, will provide territorial authorities (TA) with relevant and timely data on how their local economies are tracking in regards to tackling youth unemployment.

MTFJ Education to Employment Workshop



The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs partnered with the Ministry of Education to deliver a workshop focused around bridging the gap between education and employment.

On the 10th April, the Government announced it will spend more than $5 million on a scheme to get more young people a driver's licence, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced.

In early 2019 MTFJ Chairman Mayor Max Baxter and Taskforce Coordinator Noa Woolloff went on a road trip to visit South Island Councils and to hear from the Mayors about the local challenges facing their communities in relation to youth unemployment.

Tuia Rangatahi Programme: Mayoral Training Workshop 2019  

The Tuia Mayoral Workshop, a big thank you to the Wellington City Council for supporting the training day – legends.

At the 2018 LGNZ conference in Christchurch, MTFJ and central government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to signal the parties joint intention to create better employment outcomes for young people in New Zealand.

MYD has recently launched its current funding round, a Contestable Fund that is now open for young people or organisations that need funding to deliver youth development opportunities or a new, innovative enterprise project. Applications close 2nd July 2018.

MTFJ & Tuia were delighted to attend the 2017 Tuia Mayoral Workshop in Wellington, which was proudly supported by Wellington City Council.  

The Tuia team put together a fantastic day designed to give Mayors new to the programme insight into how to best work with their rangatahi.

Bryan Rawiri, 25 years old, was born and raised in Matamata and belongs to the eastern Waikato iwi of Ngati Haua.   He is currently completing his apprenticeship in Baking. Bryan was the TUIA delegate in 2014 for the Matamata-Piako District, where he was mentored by the Mayor.
