The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs partnered with the Ministry of Education to deliver a workshop focused around bridging the gap between education and employment.
The workshop brought together local and central Government, iwi, business and NGOs from Whangarei, Rotorua and Lower Hutt to explore education to employment models which could be implemented in their communities. The workshop was facilitated by Dave Turner, an education to employment expert who has a long standing history with the Taskforce.
Different ideas were raised around pair based learning, project based learning and ensuring that work exploration is futures orientated. When are engaging with young people, we need to ensure that we are harnessing their creativity and imagination, this is particularly relevant with the increasing age of robotics and artificial intelligence.
There is strong evidence to suggest that when young people can recall 'four or more employer contacts' are five times less likely to be NEET (not engaged in education training or employment) than those who had no involvement.
A big thank you to the Ministry of Education for partnering with us to make this workshop happen and Dave Turner for facilitating!
