Youth Employment

Small and remote communities often face extra challenges when it comes to employment, including limited access to skill development, driver licensing, and employers. This partnership tackles those issues by connecting councils—led by their mayors—with local employers to access local job opportunities that meet the unique needs of each region.

Each participating CEP council runs a customised programme focused on the key industries and challenges in their area. The funding is flexible, allowing MTFJ staff to take a localised, individual approach when supporting rangatahi into work. This includes work readiness development and support and may include wage subsidies for employers, covering training costs (such as driver licensing), and providing tool and equipment subsidies.

MTFJ’s local connections and in-depth knowledge of their communities mean they are well-positioned to address the employment challenges in their regions. By working closely with MSD, we ensure that resources are used effectively and that services are not duplicated. Through this initiative, councils are not just connecting young people with jobs—they’re helping to build stronger, more resilient local economies.
